Process for mainland license

Do I still need a local sponsor for Dubai Mainland company setup?

No. Not for most businesses. A local sponsor is no longer required for around 1,000 commercial and industrial activities on the Dubai mainland, which means 100% foreign ownership without a UAE national holding 51% of your shares.

The exceptions are a small list of strategic-impact activities, which may still require local participation or special approval. Some professional licences also use a local service agent for administrative formalities only - no shares, no control. We can confirm where your activity falls before you file.

What is the minimum office space requirement for Mainland company in Dubai?

There's no fixed square-footage minimum, but a mainland company must have a physical office with a valid Ejari-registered tenancy. A flexi-desk or shared workspace satisfies this requirement for many activities.

The practical point is that your office size sets your visa quota — roughly one visa per 9 sqm of registered space. Start with what covers your immediate needs and scale the office as your team grows.

Can I trade with UAE government as a Mainland company?

Yes. One of the main advantages of a mainland licence is eligibility to bid on government tenders and contracts - something free zone companies generally cannot do directly. Combined with unrestricted access to the local UAE market, this is a key reason many businesses choose the mainland over a free zone.

What is the difference between Commercial, Professional, and Industrial license in Dubai Mainland?

The right licence depends on what your business actually does:

Commercial licence: for trading and supplying goods, such as electronics, building materials, automobiles, or precious metals.
Professional licence: for service and expertise-based businesses, such as IT and management consultancy, legal or tax advisory, marketing, and auditing.
Industrial licence: for manufacturing and industrial activities, such as garment production, food processing, or textiles.

Your chosen activity determines your licence type, legal form, and any approvals you'll need. Picking the wrong one is costly to fix, so it's worth confirming upfront.

There's no fixed cap - your visa quota is tied to your office space, at roughly one visa per 9 sqm of Ejari-registered premises. A larger office supports more visas; a flexi-desk supports fewer.

Two other factors matter: your business activity (labour-intensive sectors like construction can qualify for more) and your compliance record. When you need to hire beyond your quota, you can apply to increase it by upgrading your office. We handle the quota and visa processing end to end.

Can I convert my Free Zone company to Mainland later?

Yes. Moving from a free zone to the mainland is a common step for businesses that want direct access to the local UAE market or government contracts. It typically involves setting up the mainland entity and transferring your operations, activities, and visas across.

.The process has several moving parts - licensing, documentation, and visa migration, so it's best handled with guidance to avoid gaps in your operations. Our team manages the transition so your business keeps running throughout.

Do I need Ejari registration for my Dubai Mainland office?

Yes. Ejari registration of your tenancy contract is mandatory for a Dubai mainland company. You'll need it to issue your trade licence, to renew it each year, and to set your visa quota.

An expired or invalid Ejari is one of the most common causes of renewal and visa delays, so keeping it current matters. Your tenancy should also stay valid well beyond your licence expiry date.

Can a Mainland company operate in multiple emirates?

Yes. A mainland company can trade freely across all seven emirates and internationally, with no geographic restriction. A key difference from free zone companies, which are tied to their zone.

If you want a physical presence in another emirate, such as a branch or additional office, that may involve separate registration or approvals. But for trading and serving clients UAE-wide, your Dubai mainland licence covers you.

What is the annual renewal cost for Dubai Mainland license?

For most small and medium businesses, mainland licence renewal runs roughly AED 8,000 to AED 20,000 per year, broadly in line with your initial licence fee. Larger or regulated businesses can pay more.

The total depends on a few recurring items:

The DET licence fee, based on your activity and legal form. The market fee - typically 5% of your annual office rent.
Ejari renewal and any external approvals your activity requires.

Renewing before expiry avoids penalties, which begin immediately once a mainland licence lapses. We can manage your renewal, Ejari, and approvals together so nothing slips.
